Story
Being told that you may never wee normally again is terrifying. For most people, the words “urinary diversion” mean very little — until suddenly they become part of your own life. It can be incredibly difficult to imagine living without a functioning bladder, and the weeks and months following surgery can feel overwhelming, frightening and full of uncertainty.
I was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2022 and underwent a cystectomy. Like so many people facing this surgery, I had fears about what life would look like afterwards and whether I would ever feel like myself again.
But I want to share something I wish I had known then: life can still be full, meaningful and joyful after a cystectomy.
The road isn’t always easy, and there are certainly challenges along the way, but with time, patience and support, you can adapt, regain confidence and discover that there is still so much life to live.
I’m sharing my story in the hope that it might reassure and inspire someone who has recently been diagnosed with bladder cancer, or is facing a cystectomy and wondering what their future might look like.
You are not alone, and a bladder cancer diagnosis does not mean that life as you know it is over. There can be a life beyond the surgery — and it can be a very good one.
If my story can give even one person a little hope or courage at a frightening time, then sharing it is worthwhile.
Today 28th September 2026 I have completed a 10k walk/run which is a huge achievement for me and one I didn't think I would do after my surgery. If I can do this so can anyone else, believe in yourself.
