On 01/06/24, Nel's first birthday Maisie, Nel's sister and her friends will be taking on the Aberystwyth twin peaks challenge. Pendinas and Constitution hill.
"I want to help Ty Hafan because they help lots of families like us. Nel needs lots of help for different things ,but Ty hafan help the whole family. The twin peaks will be a big challenge for me but I will have some of my best friends with me who will keep me going" Maisie (9)
On 06/07/23 Cerys and Andrew, Nel's parents ,along with a team of friends were due to be taking on the Welsh 3 peaks challenge. **Unfortunately we have had to postpone the 3 peaks challenge due to Nel's operation being pushed back twice meaning her recovery time has pushed into this date *** new date to be confirmed ASAP thank you for your understanding and support.
"Nel was born 01/06/23 at 36+3 weeks in Singleton hospital after an extremely difficult pregnancy. We thought on multiple occasions that we would never meet our precious little Nel.
Nel and I spent a week in NICU before moving to SCBU in Glangwili where we spent a further 2 weeks.
We knew Nel would be born with a cleft lip and possibly palate but despite all of the scares during the pregnancy and the concern over her size we were reassured that there was nothing further to worry about having had extensive scans and tests during the pregnancy.
When Nel was 5 weeks old our lives were flipped upside down when we were told that Nel has a very rare chromosome disease, wolf hirschhorn, which is a life limiting condition which effects 1 in 50,000.
We were catapulted into a world we didn't know existed, constant hospital appointments and many professionals and agencies involved. It was , and can still be very overwhelming and has affected the whole family. Nel is immune compromised so as a family we have had to change many habits and Maisie has often missed out on the things we used to do.
We were aware of Ty Hafan from previous charity events but naively didn't know the extent of the work and support they offer, until we needed it ourselves.
We wanted to take on this challenge to help families like ours as Ty Hafan is a beautiful charity that is like a shining light in our darkest times and we want to ensure they can be that for as many families as possible in the future."
