Daniel Mann is raising money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity

London Marathon 2025 · 27 April 2025 ·

We are Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. We stop at nothing to help give seriously ill children childhoods that are fuller, funner and longer. Because we believe no childhood should be lost to illness.

Story

Hi there!

You might know me, you might not, but I'm Dan. I’m 24 and once upon a time, in 2019, I conquered the London Marathon, albeit slowly. Well, I'm lacing up my running shoes again for 2025, and this time, I want to share why.

Back in 2008, my cousin Oliver was diagnosed in utero with Cystic Hygroma, a rare condition that only affects 1 in 16,000, where fluid-filled sacs caused by blockages in the lymphatic system make cysts. These cysts usually pop up around the neck and head but can show up elsewhere too. For Oliver, these cysts appeared on his neck, right next to vital nerves, this meant intricate surgery at just 11 months old.

It was a nerve-wracking time for our family, but we stayed hopeful because Oliver was under the incredible care of Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). This legendary children's hospital in London, established in 1852, specializes in the toughest pediatric cases, offering a wide range of services and pioneering treatments. GOSH's reputation for excellence in clinical care, research, and innovation is second to none.

Having attended some post surgery appointments with Oliver I got to see the work GOSH does, the very poorly children looked after with the greatest care.

GOSH relies heavily on fundraising to support its life-saving work. - That’s where you come in!

On April 27, 2025, I’ll be pounding the pavements of London, running the marathon to raise as much money as possible for GOSH, so kids like Oliver can get the critical care they need.

I’m pleased to report that Oliver, now 16, made a full recovery after surgery. Due to its rarity, Oliver was used as a case study and can be seen on the NHS information leaflet for Cystic Hygroma. https://media.gosh.nhs.uk/documents/Cystic_hygroma_F0163_A4_BW_FINAL_Apr15.pdf

Thanks for reading Oliver’s story. He continues to grow into a delightful young man with the ominous possibility of cysts returning.

Although he can be an annoying cousin at times I wouldn’t want it any other way and love him dearly!

Any donation, big or small, is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Dan
