Gill and my story..

In 2018 my beautiful wife Gill (the most thoughtful and kind person you'd ever meet) was diagnosed with breast cancer aged 57. It wasn’t a good diagnosis as it was advanced, more than we knew initially but after her mastectomy we found out she had to have 28 lymph nodes removed as well. For those of you (1 in 8 women in the UK) affected by breast cancer or with relatives affected you will know that this makes it a hard road.

However, Gill wasn’t one for giving in easily and for the first two years she underwent a plethora of chemo, radio and many drugs that were designed to help and ideally free her from this insidious disease. Along the way she never, ever complained but was resolute that she would beat it. Fxxk cancer was our motto and she stepped up her daily dog walking routine walking for miles in Black Park every day! I know as I couldn’t keep up with her!

She was declared ‘in remission’ at least 3 times, she was nearly finished off by sepsis at one point, she had more pills to take daily than Boots, and we tried any new drug that the Oncologist would suggest. Throughout, she carried on teaching and doing all her City & Guilds classes and won a national teaching award along the way. Throughout she maintained her role as lead parent and guide to our 4 children and she had a wonderful group of friends who supported her.

Then in 2022 after 4 years it started to take a toll and the cancer returned once more and worse. Initially to her lungs but then her back and liver. By spring 2022 she was starting to have trouble breathing and after a few months struggle had to have two drains put in to release fluids from her lungs. For someone always so proud of her appearance like Gill this was awful and she started to stay home a lot and she couldn’t walk the dog. She could only sleep sitting up in bed and her appetite waned. She went into hospital quite a few times and on July 11th for the last time and on July 12th she passed away. Myself and Lulu were with her till early morning the night before.

In 2018 after the diagnosis myself and 7 friends did 72 Holes in a Day at Beaconsfield Golf Club and raised £15,000 for cancer charities. This time we are being more ambitious and are doing 100 Holes in a day and have joined forces with a number of other golfers to jointly raise funds for the two biggest killers of men and women in the UK; Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer. The details are below and we appreciate any donation you can give however small.

Thank you for your support
