Running with Colitis to show what’s possible

Mark Dean is raising money for Crohn’s & Colitis UK

Running half marathon and marathons throughout 2026

We’re the UK’s leading charity for Crohn’s and Colitis. Right now, over 500,000 people in the UK are living with a lifelong disease that many people have never heard of. We’re working to improve diagnosis and treatment; to fund research and to raise awareness.

Story

Most recently, I was diagnosed with colitis.

Colitis is unpredictable. It affects energy levels, recovery, nutrition, and overall wellbeing. There are periods of fatigue, flare-ups that disrupt routine, and days where simply feeling “normal” takes more effort than people realise. It can impact confidence, performance, and everyday life in ways that aren’t always visible from the outside.

That is exactly why I’m running and why I’m fundraising for Crohn’s & Colitis. I will be taking on many Marathons such as Tokyo and Berlin Marathon, London aswell as many half marathons along the way such as the Big Half 2026

I want to show that a diagnosis does not mean the end of ambition. Living with colitis has forced me to adapt, to listen to my body more closely, and to become even more disciplined with training and recovery. It has changed the process but it hasn’t changed the standards I set for myself.

I work with elite athletes in professional sport, where resilience and continuous improvement are non-negotiable and I hold myself to the same standard. Every day I see what is possible when people commit to progress despite challenges. Now, I apply that same mindset to my own journey.

Since 2023, I have broken my marathon personal best every single year:

• 3:33 in 2022

• 2:52 in 2023

• 2:45 in 2024 (broken twice)

• 2:43 in 2025

Those numbers are not about ego. They represent consistency, planning, combining structured endurance training with strength work, and refusing to let setbacks dictate the outcome. They show that progress is still possible even while managing a chronic condition.

Colitis has made me more self aware, more patient, and more determined. It has reminded me that strength isn’t just physical it’s about showing up when things feel uncertain. It’s about adjusting without giving up.

Through this challenge, I want to represent everyone living with Crohn’s & Colitis who may feel limited by their condition. I want to show that goals can still be set. Progress can still be made.

By fundraising, I’m hoping to support research, awareness, and vital services for people living with these conditions. Many suffer quietly. Many deal with daily challenges that go unseen. Greater awareness and funding can make a real difference.

If you’re able to donate, no matter how small, you’re helping support a community that deserves greater understanding and better solutions. And you’re helping prove that living with colitis doesn’t mean lowering expectations — it means adapting, pushing forward, and continuing to believe in what’s possible.

Thank you for supporting the journey

We’re the UK’s leading charity for Crohn’s and Colitis.

Right now, an estimated 500,000 people in the UK are living with a lifelong disease that many people have never heard of. And the real number could be almost double that.

Because of the stigma and misunderstanding surrounding these diseases, thousands of people are suffering in silence.

But they’re not alone.

We’re working to improve diagnosis and treatment, and to fund research into a cure; to raise awareness and to give people hope, comfort and confidence to live freer, fuller lives.
