Story

Thank you for taking the time to read my page.

It's estimated that 55,000 people in the UK are living with a brain tumour every day and 5,300 people lose their lives each year. Not many people know this, but I lost my older sister Veena to a brain tumour, she was just 7 years old, I was just 3 when she passed away.

At the time, the research and treatments available were limited and largely experimental. And sadly, all these years later, the research into therapies continue to be critically underfunded, receiving just 1% of all national spend.

At this rate, we will remain at least 100 years away from a cure.

Brain tumours continue to kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer and reduce life expectancy by, on average, 27 years - the highest of any cancer. Losing Veena impacted me and my family in a big way. And is a big reason for lacing up the gloves and taking part in Ultimate White Collar Boxing on March 23rd.

At the University of Plymouth's Brain Tumour centre of excellence, Professor Oliver Hanemann, neurologist and Professor in clinical neurobiology, and his team, are leaders in the investigation of slow-growing tumours. These tumours are devastating and can bring debilitating effects. Currently, surgery and radiotherapy are the only treatment options for these low grade-tumours and, sadly, the tumours often return.

Help me to raise funds so the Brain Tumour centre for excellence can develop effective new therapies, improve survival rates and take a step closer to finding a cure.

Thank you.
