Helena Barrett-Duncan is raising money for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library

Team: Team Dolly at the Dundee Kiltwalk

Dundee Kiltwalk · 16 August 2026 · Start fundraising for this event

The Dollywood Foundation operates Dolly Parton's Imagination Library here in the UK. We work in partnership with local communities to deliver an age-appropriate book each month to children from birth until their fifth birthday - completely free to their families.

Story

Whilst this fundraiser is very much connected to my work I am so lucky that my work is my passion and something I care very deeply about. This makes my reasons for doing this very personal. At the Imagination Library we get books into the hands of children from birth to age 5, all to inspire a lifelong love of reading, something that has been proven to have transformational impacts on future attainment and outcomes.

I was lucky enough to grow up in a house full of books where I was read to every night. I am lucky enough to be able to provide this for my two boys. I grew up going to libraries and I have worked with libraries for years. I am confident enough to know they are a space for me and my boys. So many children don't have this, so many parents don't know this. There are no books at home, no bedtime stories, no weekly trips to the library, no joy being experienced through shared reading.

I am joining my colleagues and partners in Dundee to walk the Kiltwalk this year to raise money to grow our local programmes in Dundee, currently delivered by local partners including libraries across the Lochee Ward, Stobswell Forum and CLD in Whitfield. Leisure and Culture Dundee are supporting the Dundee Imagination Library steering group to sustain and grow the programme city wide so that all children can benefit from receiving the monthly book arrivals.

Whilst The Dollywood Foundation UK covers the overheads and infrastructure associated with running the programme our local partners fund the books and postage, which costs on average £2.16 per book per child. We are raising money as a team to gift 1000 books to more local children in Dundee.

It is such an honour to support members of the Dundee Imagination Library steering group to bring the programme to Dundee. They care so much about their communities and know what a difference this programme can make, in a city with high areas of child poverty and socio economic deprivation.

Please sponsor us so we can gift local Dundee children the joy of books and a lifelong love of reading. As Dolly Parton says "You can never get enough books, into the hands of enough children!"
