Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

The challenge is nearly complete! After 8 years in the making we are going to complete our final wainwright named Wetherlam near Coniston, Lake District in September 2023.

We started this adventure at Coniston by having a walk up Coniston Old Man little did we realise that this was the start of a fantastic journey which has taken us to the most scenic parts of the lakes, and met the most wonderful, kind and generous people along the way.

However in 2011 Steve found out that he had 1 kidney and diagnosed with CKD stage 4 but had no symptoms that he was ill.

By 2019 he had reached Kidney Failure and his kidney was functioning at 15%. After testing of friends / family & myself, unfortunately we were unable to donate.

Steve then started PD dialysis at home, during COVID in June 2020 this was a blow as he was determined to try and stay off dialysis until he would be lucky enough to receive a transplant.

This was made more difficult by transplants being suspended due to COVID.

However this did not stop him, and he was determined that the illness was not going to scupper his plans of continuing his 214 challenge! During the dialysis period a further 6 wainwrights were added, and then the call of all calls came on 7th December 2020 from Leeds St James hospital.

From this point onwards, Steve and I have vowed to live life to the full, and because of a families unselfish act of donation, it has given us the opportunity to fulfill our hopes & dreams! So here we are now 2 years post transplant with Steve going from strength to strength- from 6% function to a mighty 98% and showing that the gift he has received will never be forgotten 💚

Following the transplant in December 2020 we have climbed a further 101 wainwrights between May 2021 to climbing our 213th in July this year. ⛰️🏔️🗻

We would like to dedicate our final wainwright to all the Kidney Warriors out there and anyone suffering with a life changing condition - please never give up hope.

Without the help & support of Kidney Care Uk during pre & post transplant both Steve & I would have really struggled as kidney disease is not well known in comparison to other diseases despite 3.5million people having the disease in stages 3-5 in the Uk.

This is known as the silent disease as usually you get no symptoms that anything is wrong until the later stages.

If anyone would like to join us on the walk or indeed celebrate afterwards, please contact either Steve or myself directly.

Any donations greatly appreciated.
