In August I am running the Littlehampton 10K in memory of an extraordinary little boy called Matty.

Matty was one of only a handful of children in the world known to have Baker-Gordon Syndrome, a rare and complex condition. Before his diagnosis at age 11, Matty was known in the medical world as a little SWAN (Syndrome Without A Name). Despite the challenges he faced every day, Matty was brave, cheeky, and full of warmth. He left an unforgettable mark on every life he touched before he sadly passed away in 2023 aged 14.

Matty was adored by my late fiancée, Niamh, who was his PA. But far more than that, they were best friends. They shared a bond that was full of laughter, trust, and unconditional love. Watching them together was beautiful. I truly felt honoured to join them on days out and these are some of my happiest memories. Running this race is not only to honour Matty’s life, but also to celebrate the love and dedication Niamh gave to such a wonderful boy.

During Matty’s life, Chestnut Tree House was there to support him and his family through their most difficult times. The care, compassion, and comfort they provided made such a difference. They helped create moments of peace, dignity, and joy which is something every child deserves.
