Many of you will know that I take part in the TGO Challenge every year. This is a self-supported backpacking event where participants plan their own route across Scotland and complete it in 2 weeks in May. For the first time in 26 years, a name will be missing from the TGO Challenge start list – that name is Alan Sloman.

Many Challengers will have met Alan either in the hills or putting world to rights with a pint in hand. Walking has always been a huge part of his life, starting in the Cubs and winning his Explorer Belt as a Venture Scout for a 180-mile walking and geographical expedition to Corsica. He went on to complete an extra-long Land’s End to John O’Groats walk in 2007 to raise funds for the hospice where his father, Jeff, was cared for. Alan achieved all this in the face of severe kidney disease, receiving the incredibly generous gifts of donated kidneys from his brother David and his sister Megan. Alan passed away in September last year and I would like to invite you to make a donation to Thames Hospice in his memory. The lovely people at the Hospice gave the most incredibly caring and considerate support to Alan as well as to all his family. Doctors, nurses, carers, cleaners, volunteers – you were all amazing, thank you. Their care was transformative and meant that his last days could be spent in an environment that was as loving, comfortable and dignified as possible.
