Indigenous eye health in Australia is marked by higher rates of vision impairment and blindness as a result of limited access to healthcare, socioeconomic disadvantage, and cultural differences. The Fred Hollows Foundation tackles these issues through community engagement, outreach programmes, capacity building, and advocacy, with all proceeds going directly to the charity.
The Foundation collaborates closely with Indigenous communities to understand their needs and preferences, and it offers culturally appropriate care. Outreach programmes, such as mobile clinics, break down geographical barriers by bringing screenings and treatments to remote locations. By training Indigenous eye health workers and advocating for policy changes, the Foundation promotes sustainability and systemic change.
Thus, we chose to join the campaign hosted by Alexander Maloof - president of the UNSW Ophthalmology Society and The Seven Solution's Charity arm, in raising funds to address the complex challenges causing inequality in Indigenous Australian eye health.
We appreciate your help in giving what you can!
The Fred Hollows Foundation is an international development organization focusing on blindness prevention in Indigenous Australian communities and around the world. They train surgeons and eye health workers, provide equipment, fund research, and support advocacy in eye health.
The Fred Hollows Foundation has demonstrated their commitment to reducing the burden of eye disease in Indigenous communities. For this reason, in my role as president of the University of New South Wales Ophthalmology society (OculusSoc), I commenced an annual fundraiser for the Fred Hollows foundation in 2023 to ameliorate the burden of eye disease.
To this day, the fundraiser continues - only now, it spans several institutions and schools whose help I have enlisted in raising funds.
My vision was, and remains, to help contribute to closing the gap in indigenous eye health outcomes through our generous community support.
