13K on the 24th – For Steve 💙
Of all the dates The Brain Tumour Charity could have chosen for their F*!K Brain Tumours Run, they chose 24th October.
The very day that will mark two years since I lost my husband, Steve, to brain cancer.
I couldn’t quite believe the coincidence when I saw it. It felt like something I couldn’t ignore so I’ve signed up to run 13K in Steve’s memory.
Why 13K? Because just 13% of adults diagnosed with a primary high-grade brain tumour survive for five years or longer. It’s a heartbreaking statistic, and one that desperately needs to change.
Steve and I went through so much during his illness. Three years of treatment, appointments, uncertainty, hope, heartbreak and eventually caring for him at home until he passed away. Losing him changed my life forever, and I wouldn’t wish what we went through on anyone.
As for the running… well this is going to be a challenge! I’ve only recently started finding my running legs again after months away following my heart problems last year. My runs have mostly been short distances, so 13K (just over 8 miles!) is certainly going to push me.
I’m not chasing a time or trying to break any records. I just want to cross the line knowing I’ve done something positive on a day that will always be incredibly difficult.
I’m raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity to help fund vital research and support families facing this devastating disease. Because nobody should have to go through what Steve did, or what those who love someone with a brain tumour go through alongside them.
If you can spare a few pounds, I’d be so grateful. Every donation, however small, means so much. And if you can’t donate, sharing my page would be just as appreciated.
13K. 24th October. Two years without Steve.
