Story
The 21st of February 2024 marked three years since my brother Iwan passed away. On the 12th May this year, I’ll be doing Leeds Half Marathon, which is also fittingly Iwan’s birthday. I’m raising money in memory of Iwan, for the charity ‘Alcohol Change’, which works to reduce serious alcohol harms, from mental and physical to societal and economic.
It bloody broke my heart to watch helplessly as alcoholism shattered and eventually ended the life of someone I love so much. Something I’m still trying, and sure will continue to try, to make sense of. Of course, this isn’t a unique story; many individuals and families are negatively impacted by alcohol. Hey, maybe you are- or know someone who is. Alcohol harm has become a norm within UK society, but it’s not inevitable. + that’s why Alcohol Change is so fab, because they tackle alcohol harm in loooads of ways: from campaigning against cuts to alcohol treatment services and for government regulation of alcohol marketing to shifting those big ole cultural norms (where do ya think Dry January comes from:)
As you can see Alcohol Change is close to my heart- as is running which has also helped me especially in those good ole early days of brutal grief!
