Story
My daughter, Jessica, sent me a link to this fundraiser while I was sitting beside my wife, Fiona, in hospital recently. I knew immediately that I had to do it.
Fiona was diagnosed with an Oligodendroglioma in 2025. This was discovered by pure fluke as she had no symptoms. She fell and split her head while on holiday in June. An MRI scan spotted a 'benign tumour'. This was confirmed on our return home and she underwent an awake craniotomy in November. The operation went well and she was recovering at home when she received the devastating news that it was Grade 3, malignant. She immediately started 33 rounds of radiotherapy. She then started chemotherapy in February.
Chemotherapy was tough but she was getting through it. Then last month she suffered a seizure. She was taken into hospital and seemed to be on the mend but after 2 weeks she went downhill and was admitted to ICU. She was sedated, intubated and put into a medically induced coma for 6 days. After being extubated, and recovering for a few days, she was moved back into a ward. She is still there.
Myself and Jessica are going to run 13k on the 24th October. My younger daughter, Olivia, is going to run 5k. We are going to run with our friends from the Fit Like Joggers. The FLJs have been like an extended family and have supported us throughout this period.
This horrendous disease has had a life-changing impact on Fiona, but it has also affected her family and friends. It can affect anyone, sometimes, like Fiona, with no prior symptoms.
I want to raise funds for The Brain Tumour Charity. My target is £1,000, but whatever amount I raise will help.
£300 could fund an entire day of world-class research on a project working to find kinder, better treatments for brain tumours.
£500 could fund more than 20 hours of support from our Young Adults team for young adults affected by a brain tumour.
£1,000 could support research into childhood brain tumours by covering the cost of RNA sequencing for 12 months on a research project investigating paediatric brain tumours.
If you are able to help by donating, it would be really appreciated. If you want to join us for the run, please reach out, you will be very welcome.
Thanks.
