Story
In 2025 I ran Bristol half marathon to raise money for Hostage International, and in memory of my fellow chorister, Ed Catmur whose posthumous influence got me into running (albeit somewhat reluctant running!).
The half marathon itself was pretty horrendous to run, but the fundraising was definitely the best thing I did in 2025 so I am doing it again! This time it'll be in Kent; slightly earlier in the year to (hopefully) avoid a repeat of running for hours and hours in summer heat - but also meaning fewer weeks to train!!!!! - and this time completely on my own because my wingman, Roy, has sensibly decided that running for 2+ hours is a nonsensical activity to engage with :-)
So, why Hostage International??
Kidnapping, hostage taking and arbitrary detention is a horrific experience - causing extreme isolation, vulnerability and anxiety for both the people it happens to, and their loved ones back home. Unfortunately it is becoming more and more common and affecting more and more families worldwide.
Hostage International is a unique charity founded by former hostage Sir Terry Waite that provides expert emotional and practical support to families of hostages and detainees globally, and to hostages/detainees after they return home - for however long they need it.
Owing to the politically sensitive nature of the situations that they are involved in, big fundraising campaigns aren't really something Hostage International can engage with; however as a small charity every single donation makes a big difference. Meeting some of the beneficiaries last year during fundraising really brought home the significance of the work they do - a club nobody wants to find themselves in, but one that really needs to exist.
I would be delighted if you could support me in my latest run to raise money for this unique and remarkable organisation.
Thanks so much!
