Story
In May 2026, I will be running the Hackney Half marathon in memory of my partner, Jamal Yahya Pratley. Jamal was hit by a van driver on his way to work in April 2025 and passed away in hospital 6 days later.
Jamal was a truly incredible person who worked hard to create the bright future he had ahead of him. He had big plans to see the world, progress further in his fashion career, and start a family of our own. Jamal’s passing has had a profound impact on so many people - a reflection of how loved and respected he was by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. To say we miss him deeply would be an understatement.
When I used to do my little 3km runs and call Jamal straight after for some praise, in true Jamal fashion he would always encourage me to go further. Given that he never saw me exceed 3km, I am hoping that wherever he is this half marathon will make him proud.
I will be raising money for Homerton Hope, a charity that supports patients and staff at Homerton hospital in Hackney, where Jamal was born on 13th November 2000. The charity has worked hard to provide more comfortable family areas, something which would have definitely made our time with Jamal in hospital a little bit easier. They also provide support with rehabilitation centres for brain damaged patients, some of which may have been in similar accidents. Any donations to this important cause would be greatly appreciated.
Jamal, I love you with all my heart and I hope you are resting peacefully. I will carry you with me always, until we meet again.
