My son, Fletcher was born with a ventricular septal defect (VSD), a hole in the heart wall that separates the lower chambers. Fletcher needed open heart surgery at 4.5 months old to repair the hole and the surgery was carried out at GOSH. The operation was successful and Fletcher is now a healthy 20 year old, but without the surgery he would have needed a heart and lung transplant by the age of 10 (the hole was quite large).
