As most of you are aware, my dad has suffered with alcohol addiction for over 30 years. Recently he’s been at his lowest and him and we as a family have suffered enormously with his addiction. Alcoholics are often over looked and dismissed by the system as it is such a complex illness to understand. Being a legal drug and easily accessible people find it hard to understand. Phrases like ‘He’s only drunk ‘ is easy for people to say if they don’t have any experience. As his daughter Iv found myself wondering what I can do to help in a world where this addiction is affecting so many people around us. To help support my dad Iv decided to go sober for the next 2 months (20/12/2024) give him support but mainly to try and understand even a fraction of how he is feeling when everyone around him can just simply enjoy a glass of wine. I myself don’t have any problems with alcohol addiction but to know that I’m ’not allowed it ‘ could definitely be an eye opener. I do enjoy a drink and a night out with the girls and if I’m honest with myself if I was told I wasn’t allowed it again, it would cause me some sort of discomfort. Iv found a charity that researches into alcoholism and I would be so greatful for any donations big or small. I’d like people to become more aware of this disease and people be able to talk and understand it more. After all it’s effected so many people close to my heart and maybe it would open peoples eyes to how dangerous this substance can actually be to anyone.
