Story
It's hard to say which was more alarming - finding out I had a nasty bladder cancer, or realising I would never urinate normally again. Most people have never heard of a urinary diversion and cannot imagine living day to day without a functioning bladder. Of course, as a Urologist, I knew exactly what to expect but facing the prospect in 2023 was still terrifying. I had so much reassurance and comfort from the Urostomy Association and fellow members, helping me get back to a 'new normal', which is why I am now taking part in the "Take a Wee Walk" challenge this October, walking 31 miles in support of the Urostomy Association's "Take a wee walk challenge".
On 1 October 2026, I will begin this walk with a clear purpose: to raise vital funds for the charity's 'Sign of Support' appeal: https://urostomyassociation.org.uk/news/introducing-sign-of-support/. I have set a target of £500, and every donation will help provide practical and emotional support to people like me facing life with a stoma.
The Urostomy Association offers a lifeline through its helpline, patient packs, volunteer buddy scheme, "meet the expert" webinars, website, and much more. These services help people prepare for and manage life with a stoma.
Please give generously, your donation will help ensure that more people receive the guidance, reassurance, and advocacy they need at a critical time. Together, we can make a meaningful difference.
