Solo cycle ride from London to Istanbul · 2 April 2023

AHAH was on the ground in Turkiye within 48 hours of the earthquakes, and we are aiming to stay around to support the long term recovery and resilience through supporting support families with access to housing and education over the next year.

Story

Welcome to our JustGiving page.

Hi, my name is Danica. Thank you for dropping by! My husband Harry is embarking on a solo cycle adventure from our home in Hackney, London across much of Europe to Istanbul as his final destination to raise money for the families affected by the recent earthquakes in Turkey.

Cycling has always been a passion of Harry's and a solo cycle adventure on this scale has been a long time in the planning and dreaming! He is doing the trip solo with a bivouac, a camp stove, a GoPro and just a little touch of crazy!

Our vibrant and diverse neighbourhood in Hackney has a large Turkish community and we have had the privilege of getting to know some of the families in our area.

Having been in Istanbul when the 1999 earthquake hit the small town of Golcuk at 3:02am Saturday August 17th, I have seen firsthand the destruction that an event of such magnitude can wreak.

Our hearts break for the families who have lost loved ones, their homes, everything and we want to do what we can to give back in our small way.

Please give what you can and follow along as Harry journeys from our home, to Turkey. He's crazy but we love him and can't wait to see what adventures he will have on the way!

Türkiye Earthquake Relief:

At 4:17 am local time on February 6, 2023, southeastern Turkey and Syria were hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake followed by a major aftershock at 1:34 pm that measured 7.5 in magnitude. The epicenter of the quakes was located in Kahramanmaras and affected nearby cities of Gaziantep and Adana as well as northwest Syria.

The impacts have been devastating. Hospitals, major buildings and homes have collapsed resulting in tens of thousands dead and even more injured. This is the worst disaster to strike Türkiye since 1939. Wet weather and below-freezing temperatures are adding to difficult conditions, affecting search and rescue and slowing the arrival of further support.
