National 3 Peaks Challenge · 4 September 2023

In 2010 Aurora worked on the Paediatric Oncology Ward at the Uganda Cancer Institute in Kampala, Uganda. She was saddened to see that as well as battling cancer, many of the children were having to cope with malnutrition. The UCI was the only place in Uganda able to treat people from low income backgrounds. Unable to afford the daily commute to the hospital, rural parents were forced to give up work to be with their children. This devastating loss of income meant parents became unable to afford to feed their families. As a result these very sick children were dying of malnutrition – something completely preventable. Deeply moved by what she saw, Aurora felt compelled to do something. Using her skills as a nutritionist she designed a menu for the patients that was affordable, tasty and nourishing. Working with a Kampala-based food supplier, Aurora sourced locally available foods for the menu to ensure that the local economy was supported in addition to the families. Today, the ACFN works with the Uganda Cancer Institute to help provide three meals a day for every child on the ward. Nourished and with full tummies, the children no longer have to worry about feeling hungry.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In July, I’ll be attempting the National 3 peaks challenge in aid of 2 amazing charities, Aurora Children’s Foundation and Horticap.

Aurora Children’s Foundation (ACFN) is a UK-registered volunteer-run charity committed to feeding children suffering from cancer and malnutrition in Uganda. It was set up in 2014 by Aurora Rupp, a Public Health Nutritionist, after volunteering in Uganda for a year at the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI). UCI is the only place in Uganda able to treat cancer patients from a low-income background. Often unable to afford the daily commute to the hospital, rural parents are forced to give up work to be with their children. This devastating loss of income has meant that parents cannot afford to feed their children as the little money they have is prioritised on drugs and chemotherapy.

Therefore, ACFN’s primary focus is to support the UCI and enhance the nutritional contents of the daily meals provided to the children admitted to the inpatient ward so that children no longer die of malnutrition. Over the years, with the kind support of individuals, ACFN also introduced a porridge feeding programme for children undergoing chemotherapy treatment on the outpatient ward, the first of its kind.
