Story
This year, I've decided to attempt to run my first half marathon. For those of you who may not know – I am also (up until recently) horrendously unfit – have always struggled to make it more than a few KMs without stopping and my current running pace is around where some people can walk.
Over the last few months I’ve tried to really focus my training to be able to get to a place where I can run distances (short ones) – and Hackney is the first time I’m going to attempt to run a half marathon.
The learning curve to build my distance up from running to the fridge to 5k, to 10 to 21 has been near vertical - I've never been an athlete - but what better excuse than to try and raise money for the brilliant team at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
I hear about the work that GOSH do almost daily - as my partner Becs is a pediatrician in the Rheumatology Team. The work that the many brilliant teams do at GOSH to help care for children with chronic health conditions can be life changing for their patients.
Every day, around 750 seriously ill children and young people are seen at GOSH from all over the UK for life changing treatment and care. Every day, doctors and nurses battle the most complex illnesses, and the brightest minds come together to achieve pioneering medical breakthroughs. Every day is a chance to make a difference.
I know there are loads of wonderful causes – but if you can spare even a few quid – it would mean a lot to be able to continue the work that GOSH do, and for those who are around and want to come support, heckle or have a (hopefully) successful post-run beer - the race is on May 18.
