James’ Christmas + bday fundraiser for ME research

Karen Hargrave is raising money for The University of Edinburgh
Celebrating the birthday of James

on 26 December 2025

ME/CFS is estimated to affect about 400,000 people in the UK. Research at the University of Edinburgh aims to find the genetic causes of why people become ill, better understand the disease and ultimately find effective treatments.

Story

Friends and family will know that for the past few years James has been affected by very severe ME following a Covid infection in 2022. He’s currently fully bedbound and, due to extreme sensory sensitivities, spends most of his time in a dark room on his own.

James is a Boxing Day baby and, with both Christmas and his birthday coming up, people have been asking what to get him for Christmas. It’s hard finding gifts James can enjoy given his limitations and so he’s asked for donations to ME research in lieu of gifts this year. And so, here we are!

The ME/CFS research team at the University of Edinburgh is investigating the genetic causes and possible biomarkers of ME. Their work includes DecodeME - the largest study of ME/CFS in the world – which earlier this year reported groundbreaking findings. The team are fundraising to continue their work. If you were thinking of marking James’ birthday/Christmas with a gift, we hope you’ll consider making a donation.

Thank you for your support.
