Story
Last year, Mom made sure she was at the finish line to watch us complete our first triathlon. We smile and think of her signature cheerleading “woo hoos.” This year, we’re training and racing the Chicago Triathlon together in her memory to support the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation.
When we crossed the finish line last year, Mom had unknowingly been living with breast cancer. Her annual screening was days later, and in September she was diagnosed. We are still processing the first time we heard those dreadful words… “metastatic”…”stage four.” Our Mom? How? In the weeks that followed, her health declined rapidly.
Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) is really aggressive and tends to be less researched than other forms of breast cancer. For Mom, it was so aggressive that it spread before she even had a chance to diagnose it and seek treatment.
We ask you for your support as our team fundraises for the TNBC Foundation. We hope that other women afflicted with this terrible cancer might find successful treatment, and that patients and their families may have the resources they need to support each other. What a blessing that would’ve been for us.
Mom was always such a great example of taking care of her body and it’s really unbelievable that she died so suddenly. Cancer can happen to anyone. As we train and move our own bodies, it’s not lost on us what a a blessing it is to be able to complete this race. We’ll swim, bike and run through mom’s “Sweet Home Chicago” and think of her through every step, stroke, and drop of sweat. She loved to move, and now we move in her honor. Thanks for your support and generosity.
