Jennie Smith is raising money for Brighter Futures Zambia

Scottish coast to coast cycle · 24 August 2025

As trustees of Brighter Futures Zambia (BFZ), we are on a mission to empower vulnerable children and young people to achieve brighter futures. Please support us as we challenge ourselves to raise vital funds for our small but mighty charity.

Story

🚴 Coast to Coast (Again!) for Brighter Futures Zambia 🌍

15 years ago, father-daughter duo Morley and Jennie pedalled their way across England from coast to coast. A lot has changed since then — Jennie’s had two children, and Morley’s had a hip replacement — but their determination to make a difference hasn’t wavered one bit.

This summer, to celebrate Morley’s 80th birthday, they’re getting back in the saddle to take on the Scottish Coast to Coast cycle challenge, raising funds for Brighter Futures Zambia (BFZ) — the small charity Jennie co-founded, which continues to make a big difference to vulnerable children and young people in Zambia.

Why BFZ?

Brighter Futures Zambia provides education and holistic support to children and young people who face real challenges every day. BFZ works to make sure every child it reaches has the chance to live a happier, healthier and safer life, and the opportunity to realise their potential — no matter their background.

Education is at the heart of BFZ’s mission — something Morley, a retired maths teacher and Head of Sixth Form, has dedicated his life to. These days, he uses those same maths skills to help BFZ stay on track financially — and still believes fiercely in the power of education to transform lives.

A Team Effort ❤️

Morley has completed epic bike challenges before — including Land’s End to John O’Groats (twice!)— but after spending the last few years with increasingly limited mobility waiting for a hip replacement, this will be his biggest challenge yet. It’s a goal he’s determined to reach as he turns 80.

He won’t be riding alone:

- Jennie, his daughter and fellow BFZ co-founder, is by his side once again.

- Katie, Morley’s other daughter and also a BFZ co-founder, will be joining for part of the ride.

- And step-daughters Dawn and Jill, both long-time BFZ supporters (with Jill also volunteering for the charity), have been helping Morley regain his cycling strength in preparation.

What We’re Aiming For

Together, we’re hoping to raise at least £1,500 to support the vital work of BFZ in Zambia. Your donation, however big or small, will go directly towards supporting children’s education, wellbeing, and brighter futures.

💛 If you believe in the power of education, in resilience at any age, or in the difference a small charity can make — please support us.

Thank you for cheering us on!

With gratitude,

Morley, Jennie and the Brighter Futures Zambia family
