Wales Air Ambulance 100km Cycle Challenge - Sunday 7 September 2025

Story

I am taking part in Wales Air Ambulance 100km Cycle Challenge.

On Sunday 7th September I will be cycling from Cardiff to Llanelli to support Wales Air Ambulance Charity. At the completion of this ride I am going to leave Llanelli and continue for a further Approximately 160 miles through the night to my home in Conwy North Wales and stopping at the Wales Air Ambulance base in Caernarfon to meet the crew who saved my life. I aim to complete the whole challenge within a 24 hour timeframe

I had a heart attack on Friday 21st March this year whilst out cycling a 100 miles on my local roads near Beddgelert where I had no mobile signal or internet. I walked to the nearest property and used their landline to contact emergency services whom dispatched an ambulance whom arrived 1hr and 10 minutes later and performed an ECG on me and informed me that I was having a heart attack. This information was sent to Glan Clwyd hospital whom immediately dispatched an air ambulance. They promptly arrived and loaded me on for a ride to Glan Clwyd where a specialist team were awaiting and they performed an Angiogram on me. This procedure undoubtedly saved my life and I was then in a specialist ward for the next 4 days where they looked after me and also did a heart echo scan which showed no lasting damage to my heart. Upon my discharge I did everything as I was told to do and within a few weeks I joined an 8 week heart rehab programme, doing physical exercise whilst supervised and monitored and was finally discharged by them and was allowed to go back to my cycling as long as I followed their advice on certain heart rate parameters. I want to do this challenge in order to help raise money for this much needed service and it would be great to meet up with the helicopter crew whom were there on that day

Every year they need to raise £11.2m to keep the helicopters in the sky and rapid response vehicles on the road. The teams onboard, deliver advance critical care to patients across Wales 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
