Story
I’m running the Great North Run on 13th September 2026 in aid of the suicide prevention charity Campaign Against Living Miserably.
I’m joining colleagues at LNER and other fundraisers across the country to support the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM). Taking on the Great North Run will raise vital funds for our charity partner and support CALM's life-saving work to prevent suicide, offer support to those in crisis, and challenge the stigma around mental health. This continues their great work.
Many people are affected in some way by suicide however the Rail industry is disproportionately affected. The effect on the persons family and friends is obvious but there are many other people affected. Train drivers, crew, station staff, railway infrastructure responders and emergency services suffer life changing effects as well. I see this first hand in my current role working with those affected on the day and for the months that follow.
If we can identify, support and prevent loss of life and the effect it has through keeping charities such as CALM well supported then it’s got to be worth training and running for!
Please consider donating to this great cause - it’ll spur me on to run faster too!
Thank you in advance, John
