Jon's big swim for The Wave Project

Attempting to swim the length of Lake Windemere · 19 August 2023
My job as an orthodontist In Exeter, has involved me working with thousands of young people over the years. As time goes by, I am becoming become increasingly concerned about the number of my patients that are suffering with anxiety and a wide range of mental health issues. In fact statistics show that 1 in 6 children in the UK struggle with their social, emotional or mental health.
I was fortunate to grow up near St Ives in Cornwall. When I felt stressed or overwhelmed I would often head to the beach for a swim or a surf and within moments of being in the ocean, my head would clear and my worries would disappear.
The Wave Project, is a fantastic NHS recognised charity, that aims to take vulnerable young people with physical and mental health needs out surfing. The results of this surf therapy are amazing and include:
- Higher self-esteem
- Reduced anxiety
- Better trust and friendships
- More positive friendships
In an attempt to raise money for this brilliant charity, I have signed up for the "Windemere-One-Way" challenge, which will involve attempting to swim the eleven mile length of Lake Windemere on Saturday 19th August. During the swim, I will be accompanied by my good friend Toby Pool, who has kindly agreed to paddleboard beside me, feed me loads of bananas and (dentally unfriendly) snacks and be prepared to rescue me if needed.
Please have a look at the Wave Project's website, any sponsorship you can kindly provide will make all the hours of training and stomach cramps worthwhile.
