Story

Me and some close family members are going to walk 26 miles in the North York Moors to raise awareness for the struggles of Alzheimer's and help raise money for the Alzheimer's Society. This charity holds a very close place to mine and my family's heart, as my Grandma is currently suffering with dementia, and other family members have had to experience battles with this devastating disease before. It has been very difficult for us to watch her struggle with the cognitive toll dementia has had on her mental and physical health. It's very easy to get caught up in the 'now' and the current sadness, but I think it is far more important to remember the beautiful times we all shared with Grandma. There aren't enough words to describe an amazing Grandma to Twelve, Mother to Four, and Wife to One, and there is no doubt that everyone close to her loves her dearly. I am eternally grateful to have had such a close, loving, funny relationship with my Grandma throughout my life. When told that I was thinking about going to culinary school after Year 11, she still thought I was going mid-way through Year 13 (at Sixth Form), I think someone needed to tell her that ship had sailed. She always tells me a story from when I was a baby, that I would snuggle into her arms and she wouldn't let me go, so much so that I expect to hear it every time I visit. But I wouldn't change that for anything, I will always cherish little stories like that and the fond memories of our times together.

Alzheimer’s Society are working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. They do this by giving help to those living with dementia today and by providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding ground-breaking research.
