We are embarking on a 35-mile walk from Oldham Athletic Football Ground to Whiston Hospital to raise funds for two incredible causes: The Christie at Oldham and the Bereavement Midwifery Team at Whiston Hospital. We expect the walk to take about 15 hours, starting at 4am on Saturday, May 24th, and aiming to reach Whiston around 7 pm.

The walk is being led by my Dad, John Stigwood, who is the driving force behind this event. His inspiration comes from personal experiences with both organisations. In May 2022, my daughter Maddison was stillborn at Whiston Hospital, and the support we received from the Bereavement Midwifery Team was beyond anything we could have imagined. They provided us with essential items, such as clothes to dress Maddie in, a memory box to help create lasting memories, and a cold cot that allowed us precious time with her. The Bereavement Midwifery Team is also working to soundproof the rooms where babies like Maddie are born, ensuring families can experience more privacy and peace during such difficult moments. These thoughtful services, however, are not without cost, which is why we’re walking to give back and ensure others receive the same care.

Just a few months after Maddie’s passing, my Dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Thanks to the exceptional care he received at The Christie at Oldham, he is now cancer-free. Last year, The Christie was able to purchase vital mobility aids for patients in their care, helping them to regain independence and improve their quality of life. The Christie’s mission is to provide world-class cancer treatment closer to home, and the funds raised will help support its programs and services that go above and beyond NHS funding.

All donations raised will be split equally between these two amazing organisations, ensuring they can continue offering the exceptional care and support that has meant so much to our family.
