Story
My name is Lev and I am 10 years old.
I am taking on a 100 mile walk along the Icknield Way Trail, starting in Suffolk and finishing at Ivinghoe Beacon in the Chiltern Hills, to raise money for Young Epilepsy. Plan A is that I will complete the walk in 10 days.
I have multiple seizures every day, but I want to show that epilepsy does not stop me from taking on a challenge and helping others. I am hoping to complete this challenge before my brain surgery in May.
Every step I take is to raise awareness and support children like me who are living with epilepsy.
When Lev was four and a half, he had his first seizure. Not to worry, we were told, probably just a little childhood Epilepsy- he’ll likely grow out of it.
It was quite manageable, maybe three or four seizures a year, we could even go five months in between and almost forgot it existed at times.
Gradually over the last few years the seizures have become more and more frequent and unfortunately we can now see up to 30 a day.
With the help of Great Ormond Street we have found the cause which is Focal Cortical Dysplasia, basically an uneven layering of the outer cortex in one area.
This type of Epilepsy which comes under ‘structural’ is notorious for becoming drug resistant and this is exactly what’s happened to Lev.
One by one he has had to give up the things he loves such as mountain biking, basketball matches, go karting and just messing about with his mates outside.
After numerous tests over the last year, it was decided that Lev is a candidate for Epilepsy brain surgery. The hope is that the surgeons can remove the area that is causing the electrical misfiring.
The surgery has been bought forward from August due to the amount of daily seizures and will take place on the 21st of May.
To keep his fitness and spirits up, we have been doing lots of walking and now this has literally grown legs. For unknown reasons he has less seizures when he’s moving about.
So an idea was hatched to have a challenge in the run-up to surgery. Lev decided that he would like to try and walk 100 miles on the Ickneild way, from Thetford in Suffolk to Ivinghoe Beacon in the Chiltern Hills.
He is raising money for Young Epilepsy who have supported him over the last 18 months and are a fantastic charity.
He is doing really well so far, and would love people to get behind him to complete ‘Lev’s 100 mile challenge- walking with Epilepsy’
