Story
I'm fundraising for the WORLD LAND TRUST by joining their MILES FOR THE WILD challenge to help protect threatened land and species.
From 1 to 31 October 2025, our collective goal is to cover 5,247 miles (8,445 km) - the distance from WLT’s office in Halesworth, England to the heart of our Autumn Appeal: El Silencio Reserve in Colombia’s Middle Magdalena Valley where irreplaceable forest, wetlands and wildlife urgently need your help.
In this valley, in just the past 50 years, more than 70% of ancient forest in has gone.
Forest continues to be lost due to cattle ranching, a man-made canal threatens vital wetlands, and extraordinary species are perilously close to extinction.
WLT currently have a once in a lifetime opportunity to safeguard 1,495 hectares (3,694 acres) of highly threatened land from irreversible destruction by bringing it under the protection of the El Silencio reserve, before it’s lost forever to deforestation. Read about it here:
Every mile moved and every pound raised will help protect threatened habitats, restore wild places, and safeguard the homes of Endangered and Critically Endangered species.
So I'm donning my goggles and planning to swim as many miles as I can in Bungay swimming pool during October. Every mile I swim will by logged on Strava and will contribute towards the overall team goal to reach the reserve.
Every pound I raise will be matched by WLT to triple it's value and will go towards the protection of highly threatened land from destruction, restore incredible habitat and save the wild homes of endangered species.
I've long been a supporter of WLT because I believe that at a time of climate crisis and mounting biodiversity loss, it's never been more important to support the work of charities like this. With more than 3.3 million acres already protected by them in collaboration with local communities, WLT have made a real impact on the natural world, and now we can too. All donations are hugely appreciated and will go directly to WLT's Autumn Appeal.
Thank you!
Katharine
