We won't give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect, but we need your help too. Join the 2026 TCS London Marathon and help us to ensure that no one has to face a mental health problem alone.

Story

At the age of 11, my family faced an unexpected crisis and became homeless overnight. Years later, during a conversation with my mum, she mentioned that others had commented on my weight gain. Her response was, “Oh, that’s just Kate’s way of dealing with it.”

Since that time, my weight has fluctuated all my life. I often find myself using food as an emotional crutch and comfort blanket, similar to how some people might reach for a cigarette or find themselves drowning in excessive screentime. I find myself envious of those who can channel their emotions into exercise. For me, the endorphins always remain just out of reach; no matter how fast I run, they always seem to elude me. Certain individuals have naturally lower serotonin levels and yet it seems to unsettle some people if they discover someone taking medication to regulate their hormones.

This may seem inexpedient, but I have decided to take on the challenge of running the London Marathon for MIND even though every step is a struggle. So how can such a gruelling endeavour contribute to mental well-being? It may seem counterproductive, but my motivation stems from a belief that mental health still carries a stigma. The more we normalise discussions around it, the better it becomes for everyone. Additionally, despite the physical challenges of running, each step makes other aspects of my life feel more manageable—whether it’s cleaning, tackling DIY projects, or navigating daily tasks.

Regardless of how I complete the course, (be it through running, walking, limping, or crawling), my ultimate goal is to raise awareness that anyone can feel good about themselves. Start small and take it steady. If you use unhealthy means to channel your stress, I’d like to hope that my efforts will motivate you to get moving, and uplift you, even if that’s chuckling at the thought of me running!

Taking on this challenge represents a significant undertaking for me. If you would like to support both me and the cause for which I am raising funds, please consider making a donation through the link provided. If you prefer not to donate but would still like to show your support, a thumbs up on Strava would mean a lot to me.

Info from MIND:

Twists and turns are a part of life, just like sweat and tears.

And together we will find a way through.

1in 4 will experience a mental health problem each year, which is why looking after our physical and mental health is more important than ever.

Whilst we know exercise and hydration are good for us, 4 in 5 Brits still aren’t drinking the recommended 2l a day and the everyday impact on our physical and mental health goes unnoticed. Since 2023, Buxton and Mind have joined forces on a shared mission to support the nation's Sweat and Tears – actively championing physical and mental health through exercise and hydration.
