Story
Back in November 2014 I was told age 49 that I had advanced, stage 4 , terminal prostate cancer and may only live for 2 more years.
After completing gruelling chemotherapy and radiotherapy I dared to take on the iconic Marathon Des Sables foot race, a 7 day ultramarathon of 250 kilometres in the Sahara where the temperature reaches 50c and the sand is energy sapping.
Somehow I managed to complete this in 2016 so went back and finished again in 2017, 2018 and 2019. In 2020 I ran 2600 laps in covid in my back garden to complete the distance and in 2021 I was helicoptered out of the race with food poisoning, buried in ice twice and had 15 bags of IV drip over the next 36 hours to stabilise me.
So in April 2026 I went back one last time and finished this race for the 5th time on the 10 year anniversary of my first finish.
As its the 40th edition of this race they decided to make it harder, the non stop 4th day was increased to 100k and the overall distance to 270k, it was as ever a tough race.
But I dont stop because I finish a race, there is always another, Al Andalus Ultmate in July is a 230k race in Spain. The organisers bill it as "HOT, HILLY, HARD", I have finished this race twice before but failed back in 2017 when I was probably fitter than I am now.
I am 60 now, 11 years of cancer drugs and treatment have made everything harder but I want to inspire others with a challenge in their lives to never give up, chase those dreams and create unforgettable memories.
But of course there is the other reason, the most important reason, the one I have dedicated my life to. I want to raise more funds and awareness for Prostate Cancer UK. 1 in 8 men get prostate cancer in the UK, and a man dies of it every 45 minutes, that's 12,000 men dying, families ruined every year! Your donation will help them create a time when no man has to fear this disease, no dad has to tell their kids like I did that "Dad is dying".
Thank you for whatever you can do, between us we will make a difference.
If you want to know more of my story, I wrote a book "Dead Man Running" available on Amazon that will hopefully inspire you to live your best life today and every day.
