Story
This September, I will be running the Robin Hood Half Marathon and raising funds for Sharewear - an amazing local charity which provides a choice of clothing to people in economic difficulty.
Before 2020, I couldn't run to the end of the road without getting out of breath, and didn't think running was for me, due to the metal plate and pins in one of my ankles. But I started running a little during lockdown and was soon doing 5k regularly. Little did I know that was just the beginning and I'd be training for a half-marathon!
After getting out of the habit of running over last winter, I found a new source of motivation in May 2023 when I started running with a group of volunteers and people seeking asylum who are housed in my village. Getting outside for regular exercise, chatting and encouraging one another has been a really positive experience, and a simple way to support their wellbeing.
Whilst it's well known that 'free of charge' physical activity such as running is hugely beneficial for mental health and wellbeing, people unable to afford the cost of appropriate clothing miss out on exercise, simply because they don't have appropriate basic clothing to take part, such as a pair of trainers.
During the cost of living crisis, Sharewear is seeing a hugely increased number of people needing to access their services, and the most requested items are jogging bottoms, trainers, good shoes for walking & coats. Their service users can't take steps to improve their mental health without their support, but Sharewear can't meet the rising need without your help.
Sharewear will spend the funds raised on buying jogging bottoms at cost directly from a manufacturer when their supplies run low, as well as on the collection of trainers from all those outlets taking part in their #Trainers4Trainers appeal.
Thank you for your support.
