Kwan & Ruth's fundraiser for Sheffield Chinese Christian Church

Spartan Midlands 2024 · 29 June 2024 ·
On Saturday 29th June 2024, we will be running the gruelling Midlands Spartan Sprint Event to raise funds for Sheffield Chinese Christian Church’s (SCCC) Building Fund! This is a 20 obstacle course stretched over 5 kilometres. Obstacles can include climbing under barbed wire, mud crawling, monkey bars, rope climb, tyre flips and Atlas stone carries.
Why are we running?
We have been training intensely alongside 15 others for the past month and have decided to fundraise for the Sheffield Chinese Christian Church (SCCC) building. Our church building is in serious need of renovation and we would like to help raise money to help maintain this precious space for the generations to come.
Why raise money for SCCC?
Kwan: When I was just 1 years old, my parents and I came from Hong Kong to Sheffield, UK. The community at SCCC were the first people that showed loved and care for my parents and me when we had very little. I am very grateful to those that took care of me, as well as my younger brother and sister who were born in Sheffield. My father studied at the University of Sheffield and my mother worked multiple jobs in between pregnancies to provide for us. As a family, we would have felt very lost and immensely struggled if it was not for the hospitality, love and spiritual encouragement of the church members.
Having left Sheffield at the age of 6 years old and returning to work as a hospital pharmacist 17 years later, I can confidently call this church my home and it’s where I met my wife, Ruth! I have grown with the help of the church, through the sharing of the good news of Jesus and his love, and he continues to give me hope through the highs and lows of this life.
Ruth: The church is my second home, away from my family in Hong Kong. I came to the UK during university but struggled to find a church and community that I felt a true sense of belonging. When I came to Sheffield near the end of Covid times, I visited SCCC and was welcomed dearly even though we had to sit 2m apart. I decided to continue attending and I have grown in maturity, learnt more about the Bible, made so many new friends. This place has played a special part in my life as I got baptised and had our wonderful wedding here!
The church has been helping families like ours for over 50 years and is playing an important role now more than ever before. Millions of Hong Kong citizens have been coming (and are still coming) over to the UK to find refuge, hope and peace. We continue to pray as a community for the brokenness in the world and look to support those in need where possible.
The building enables the community to gather to worship, love one another in practical ways and dive into God's word together. The space is very much needed as it provides for people of all ages (families, students, youths and the elderly) and of any background.
If you would like to visit the church (and me haha), find out more about the work that we do or support us, please don’t hesitate to reach out by commenting on this page or messaging directly. The church website can be found here: https://www.shefccc.org.uk/
Thank you for reading to the end of this. Your prayers, words of encouragement and donations are very much appreciated.
God bless you and see you on the other side 🏋🏻♀️🏃🏻💨
Much love,
Kwan & Ruth
