Story
Laura's story
I’m taking part in the following event in memory of the amazing Lou Walsh who created The Big Learner Relay. In Lou’s memory I’m trying to carry on her legacy but in the form of a paddle on the river:
We are hosting a Charity Relay Race for local groups, Businesses, Clubs & Individuals.
We are hoping to have various Paddlesport Clubs & Community Groups take part in this with us.
The Plan !
The aim for the day is very simple,
We want to create a relay team from Kings Lock, In south Leicester, to the Waterside Canoe Club, In Mountsorrel - 20KM's !
We will utilise 6 of the 12 navigation locks between the start and finish to create "Relay Handovers" where we will pass "Pudsey", our version of the Olympic Torch on to the next team, so they can take him on the next segment !
For the day we will be utlising BellBoats. BellBoats are dual Hulled, Stable Platformed boats, with a walkway up the middle, that seat up to 8 people and suited to anyone of any ability. (These boats will be steered by our crews for you)
We have planned the day so that we only need 56 people to take part, in order for the relay to run to it's full potential. But have designed it so we can accomodate up to 224 participants !
So there's no excuse for not getting booked on !
We can place you on the following segments for the relay,
- The Whole Route (20KM's)
- Half The Route (10KM's)
- Individual Segments Ranging from 2.8KM's to 5 KM's (See below for preferences)
When booking on for yourself or your team - Please advise us in the question box how long, roughly you'd like to be paddling for during the day and whether that be morning or afternoon so we can place people in suitable segments to meet their expectations...
Before the event, we will communicate to you which segment we have placed you in. We will obviously try and place you in your desired segment but please do get in touch if you are not happy with your segment or need to change for whatever reason. We will do our very best to accomodate you.
Due to us being able to scale the event up and down in size, we will communicate logistical information with you closer to the time when we have a clearer idea of participant numbers. So please bare with us.
Tickets for a full Team are £70 for a boat of 8 or £10 per person if you just want a single seat. All monies will be donated to Children In Need
So please get booked on !
Please fill in the optional "Team" or "Single Participant" Form so we don't have to chase you.
Click "Not Applicable" on the alternate form when booking on.
If you are unable to attend the trip but have time at the end of the day, why not come and see us cross the finish line at The Waterside Canoe Club in the afternoon !?
We will also have a sponsorship forms for participants & Donation links for those not able to attend, Including the chance of sponsoring a "Spot" on Laura's Learner Driver Car ! Details to follow !
! TEAMS ! Only the lead member of the group will need to register on our website to sign up the team - After this you may log back in, before the event and edit your details if needed. Also, any communication we may need to send to you in advance will be sent to the team leader.
Kit list: We recommend you wear clothes that you don't mind getting fully submerged in (Potentially!) and that will dry quickly, should that happen. Examples of these are Running/Gym Top, Running/Walking Trousers, Lightweight Lace-Up Trainers or water shoes. We do not expect any participants to fall into the water on the day but we have to be prepared !
You will also need to consider the time of year and forecast for the day in question. So a paddling Cag or Waterproof jacket used with Paddling or Waterproof overtrousers may be prudent if you have them.
You will need to bring with you a full change of clothes, including a towel and spare shoes.
!!! DONT FORGET - YOU WONT WANT TO BE LEFT OUT, WITHOUT YOUR PUDSEY EARS !!!
Buy Yours Ahead of time here - https://www.bbcchildreninneed.... - They're only £2.50
We want to see as many of you wearing them as possible !
