Story

On the 22nd August 2026, I will be facing the world's fastest zip wire to raise vital funds for local charity Staffordshire Sight Loss Association! I will be taking on a head-first 1-mile Zip Wire over Penrhyn Quarry in North Wales, reaching speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.

As many of you may know, my stepdad John lost his sight four years ago. It came as a huge shock to our family and changed our lives in ways we could never have imagined.

The impact of sight loss on both the individual and their loved ones is difficult to put into words. Everyday tasks that most of us take for granted suddenly became major challenges. Simple things like making a cup of tea or leaving the house independently required immense courage, patience, and determination.

Despite these obstacles, my stepdad has shown incredible strength and resilience. Over the years, he has worked tirelessly to rebuild his confidence, adapt to a completely different way of life, and regain his independence. What once felt impossible has gradually become achievable again.

Today, he has gone from struggling with everyday tasks to taking part in blind golf activities and embracing new opportunities. His journey is a testament to his perseverance and refusal to let sight loss define him.

Staffordshire Sight Loss has been a huge part of John’s journey and has supported him from the beginning. They have provided invaluable guidance, encouragement, and practical support throughout some of the most challenging times. They continue to offer the same compassion, care, and support to many others across Staffordshire who are affected by sight loss.

SSLA provides support, friendship, independence, advice, practical help, and hope to people who are blind and partially sighted, and to their families too. For many, it is the difference between feeling isolated and feeling connected, between struggling alone and having somewhere to turn.

SSLA is the only local sight loss charity in North Staffordshire, and every donation will help to keep these vital services going. Thank you for your support.
