Kayak, walking and cycling

Thanks to support from our local community, the N&N Hospitals Charity provided £2m funding towards the creation of a new Orthopaedic Centre in Norwich. With further support we can do even more to improve care for Trauma & Orthopaedic patients.

Story

The Spine surgery team (during scoliosis month) will be taking on this challenge to encompass our catchment area for spine surgery (although our scoliosis patients also come from further afield). We will be covering over 20 miles a day under our own steam with a long cycle on the final day just to finish us off!

The Challenge

We will start by traveling by river from Norwich to our first stop - The James Paget Hospital.

The next few days we will walk the North Norfolk coast path to Cromer (stopping at Cromer hospital) and then round to Kings Lynn Hospital.

The final day will be a long cycle along the rebellion way to complete our journey back the the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital

Why are we doing this?

Your support to help purchase a Low Dose X-Ray Imaging System will help improve the lives of patients with scoliosis and other spinal deformities. It can also be used to image other parts of the body so will have a much wider impact than just the spine.

This system will help to reduce waiting times for diagnostic imaging, and will mean that patients who require regular repeat scanning, especially from childhood, will receive lower doses of radiation across their lifetime, reducing the possibility of long-term harm that comes from radiation exposure, while providing improved diagnostic accuracy that will enhance surgical planning.

The cost of the system is in the region of £800k, and every penny that you are able to donate will help towards that total. We realise this is a big sum of money which is why we have been so ambitious with this week long endurance challenge. It’s something the team feel really strongly about! We will be using it to improve quality but also reduce long term harm (especially to children with scoliosis and those that need repeated X-rays).

Thank you for your support.
