Race for Recipients
Members of the Bristol Adults Transplant Team are taking part in this years Race for Recipients event. It is an event to coincide with organ donation week, so we get active while we continue discussions of why organ donation is so important and the amazing impact it has on the lives of recipients. As the Race for Recipients website says:
Organ Donation Week is one of the key points in the calendar year when the transplant and members of the public join together to talk about, celebrate, and highlight the significance of organ donation. It's a key opportunity to educate and build knowledge, point people to information and remind people of the need to add their name to the Organ Donor Register and talk to their family.
The challenge is to get active and travel as far as you can over the week, via whichever mode you choose.
This year the challenge starts at 6am on Saturday 21st September, and finishes at midnight on Sunday 29th September. The Monday (23rd) will mark 10 years since Mum gave me her kidney.
We have decided to take Race for Recipients as an opportunity to raise money for BAKPA - the Bristol Area Kidney Patients Association.
BAKPA works to improve the treatment, welfare and comfort of kidney patients and their carers and families.
Each year they provide funding to help us (the Bristol Adults transplant team) take as many athletes as possible to British Transplant Games.
The Games aim to demonstrate the benefits of transplantation, encouraging transplant patients to regain fitness, whilst increasing public awareness of the need for more people to join the NHS Organ Donation Register and discuss their wishes with their families. They also seek to thank and celebrate donor families and the gift of life.
This year was my first time at the transplant Games and I thoroughly enjoyed it and see why people go back to compete year after year. BAKPA paid for new kit for the team (as modelled in our team photo) which is really high quality and will last for many games to come.
We would really appreciate it if everyone shares our fundraiser and gives what they can. You can follow our progress on the Race for Recipients website and by following us on Facebook. I'll be posting updates of my progress here as well. Thanks again for taking the time to read about our fundraiser, and don't forget to share your wishes on organ donation with people close to you.
