We care for children with short lives to ensure that no family faces this alone

Story

Ty Hafan Children's Hospice has been supporting children with terminal conditions and their families for many years. There will always be children who need to access the hospice , it's not a nice reality but it is for many families. Children die and there is no escaping it.

I never imagined that I would one day have a child that would need to access the services at the hospice, but that is the reality. Luke is now approaching his 20th birthday and we are thankful that his journey has brought him so far despite the difficulties he has.

Tragically , many children accessing Ty Hafan don't reach adulthood. Many children of families that we have gotten to know over the years have endured the unimaginable pain and heart ache of losing their child. Something that no parent should ever have to go through.

In this life, a network is created, you feel as though you live in a different world to other people and the only ones who can understand and appreciate the world your living in, are those who are living it themselves and their closest. It is painful to see those children and their families go through so much.

I know that many of our friends would not have coped without the support from Ty Hafan. During those dark times, being able to have a safe place , supportive network of highly trained staff and solice meant everything.

Imagine being told your child is going to die and having to be on a busy hospital ward. Ty Hafan enables children to be transported from hospital or home to their safe place. Comforting the children and families during this time.

Over recent years many children from Lukes school, Ysgol Y Deri, have died and we have witnessed their parents lives just stop and fall apart.

Next June, myself, my Nephew Thomas and forever friends Kelly and Maria will be doing the 3 Peaks Challenge in Memory of all the children and young people who have lost their lives.

Maria's daughter and brother are also a part of the Ty hafan family due to having Duchene Muscular Dystrophy. Her brother Sam sadly passed away in 2021 at 34, but as a child and teenager spent many years causing havoc at the hospice during respite stays.

Cai, Hallie and Blisse all lost their little precious lives within a short space of time of each other.

Cai bossed it through life despite his diagnoses of Vici syndrome, which is so rare there are only 100 documemted cases worldwide. He broke the mold and surpassed expectation. The last few month of his life were spent in and out of UHW where he fought so hard. He was transferred to Ty Hafan where he could spend his last days with his family with so much support.

Most recently, Blisse lost her battle with uncontrolled epilepsy, from 4 months of age she had been battling these awful seizures and after 14 years her little body couldn't take anymore. She loved Black Stone Cherry and was an awesome little rocker.

These three were the happiest, most loving and amazing children. Life threw so many curve balls at them and Ty Hafan was there when they needed them the most.

The 3 Peaks Challenge involves walking Snowdon, Cadae'r Idrys and Pen Y Fan in the space of one day.

Please donate if you can and give a child with a life limiting condition the support they need at Ty Hafan.

Sadly, thousands of families in Wales live every day knowing their child’s life will be short. At the moment, they often face this without any care or support. Alone. Afraid. Isolated. Tŷ Hafan’s ambition is that when a child’s life will be short, no family should have to live it on their own.
