One of Africa’s smallest countries, the Gambia is also one of Africa’s poorest countries. The United Nations Development Programme’s 2016 Human Development Index ranked the country 173rd out of 188 countries. In 2015, calculations revealed that more than 60% of the overall population lives in poverty, while a little under half of the population live in poverty conditions.
Approximately three quarters of the rural population is classified as poor. Underlying the high poverty rates is the countries relative lack of economic diversity, which makes The Gambia highly vulnerable to increasingly erratic rainfall, food price volatility and financial crises.
