Story
I'm taking part in the Big Welsh Bike Ride to help fundraise for Tŷ Hafan Children's Hospice whose ambition is that when a child's life will be short, no family should have to live it on their own.
I saw the poster advertising the fundraiser on my cycle to work and was immediately drawn to it. I never attempted anything as ambitious as this ride. I just cycle to work a few times a week (~12 miles round trip). But I knew I had to do this. Why?
The poster reminded me of a remarkable boy I had the privilege, honour and fortune to know, albeit only (too) briefly: Frankie Johnson. Frankie was the younger brother of an outstanding student (Danielle) in my department. He had a life limiting condition and Danielle shared caring responsibilities for Frankie with her sister Martine. I got to spend time with Frankie on a few occasions and he left such an impression on me! His smile always lit up the room, he had a wicked sense of humour, and he was just SO positive. When I first visited him in Tŷ Hafan where he stayed from time to time to give his sisters some extra support (and him some special time), I was initially worried, that it would be sad to see a boy in discomfort who is very much aware that his life will be cut short. Boy was I wrong! He was so cheerful, and I heard others say that when they go visit Frankie, it is not so much the case that they lift him up, but that they leave very much uplifted by him and his lovely energy. What an amazing fella he's been and what a privilege to have known him.
So, when I saw that poster, I knew I had to throw myself into this adventure for Frankie. I am doing this ride in his memory. Tŷ Hafan played a key role in making Frankie, Danielle & Martine's all too limited time together special. I want to do my bit so that this can happen for other families as well.
Thank you for your support
