Story
Hi folks.
Dementia is a physical illness that causes damage to brain cells. This damage means a person’s ability to remember, think, speak and to do everyday things will change. As dementia progresses, the changes become greater, and the person will need more help. There are currently 64,000 people in Ireland living with dementia which will double in the next 25 years to over 150,000.
It's only since my own mother, Rosie, was diagnosed with this incurable illness that I realised how difficult it can be for family members. My sister Rosemary has taken on the role of full time carer and it is a very difficult challenge both physically (manual handling) and mentally, viewing your loved ones deteriorate over time.
The lost memories, silence, confusion and the frustration (on both sides) when your loved one struggles to recognise or remember your name.
The Alzheimer Society of Ireland work in helping and supporting those living with Dementia and their families and carers.
I'm hoping to raise some funds as every little bit helps......and also a good stretch of the legs always helps people mentally, and physically. My legs will hurt on this walk, but its well worth it if a few bob is raised for this worthwhile support organisation.
So if you have any spare cash, I would greatly appreciate it if you could donate....no cash amount is too small and all will be greatly welcomed.
Thanks all....I'm off to get a walk in now and start training for end of April..
