Story
Oh my, what have I signed up to?! In January when most sensible people are tucked up with hot water bottles, I’ll be shivering my way through the Arctic Challenge 2026. It’s a demanding physical journey that involves long-distance trekking, sledding and - let’s face it - plenty of teeth chattering in temperatures that regularly get as low as -30 degrees.
So, why on Earth would I agree to this?! Well, it’s all for a cause that i wholeheartedly believe in,: the National Literacy Trust. As some of you know I have done various volunteering and fundraising for the NLT before, but now it’s more important than ever. Last year saw a record decline in reading for pleasure among young people despite the proven impact reading has on life outcomes, mental health and even earning power.
Having had my own love of reading sparked in childhood, I know firsthand how much pleasure, confidence and support (as well as a way of life) books have given me in my life. As a parent, I have also witnessed the positive impact reading has had on my own children, so this is a cause very close to my heart.
I hope my arctic, um, suffering can help benefit young people around the country and inspire you to contribute to the cause in any way that you can. Thank you! ❤️📚
