Alopecia UK is a national charity providing support, community and education to improve the lives of those affected by alopecia. The charity relies on individual fundraisers and donors to continue its work. Alopecia UK receives no government or statutory funding.

Story

This September, I’m running the Great North Run with my good friend Tom Rawlings to raise funds for the amazing work that Alopecia UK does.

My journey with alopecia started in mid-2023, when I noticed a small patch of hair loss at the back of my head. What followed was rapid and overwhelming—within four months, I lost all of my hair, including my eyebrows and eyelashes, as my alopecia progressed from areata to universalis. Watching my appearance change daily, with clumps of hair falling out in such a short time, was incredibly difficult, and I really struggled to come to terms with it.

I tried every treatment available, paying privately for immune suppressants, steroid injections, minoxidil, and becoming more and more desperate for anything to work. My hair briefly came back while on immune suppressants, only to fall out again early last year. It was so painful feeling like I was slowly returning to my former self, only for it all to disappear once more. The side effects were severe, and eventually, I made the decision to stop all medication, and I can honestly say that I feel much better for it.

Alopecia isn’t just about losing hair it massively impacts confidence, mental health, and how you navigate life. For a long time, I avoided going out, completely consumed by the loss of my identity. It’s an isolating experience, something I never really understood until I went through it myself. That’s why the work Alopecia UK does is so important. They provide support networks, raise awareness, and fund research into treatments that could one day lead to a cure.

Right now, there’s no cure for alopecia, but with your help, we can support research, education, and support for those struggling especially children facing hair loss at a young age. Your donation will make a massive difference in the lives of people dealing with alopecia, helping people with alopecia feel less alone and more supported.

Any contribution, big or small, means a lot. Thank you for supporting this cause!
