The Dragon Boat Race is to fundraise for the Ocean and Shipping Community Advancing Children's Health and Research (OSCAR) campaign, an innovative fundraising partnership. Since 2011, it has brought together the international shipping community to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (UCL GOS ICH). The campaign has helped to refurbish vital facilities at the hospital and funded pioneering research into childhood cancers and immune diseases at GOSH and the UCL GOS ICH.
The OSCAR Campaign’s namesake is Oscar Parry, son of Spinnaker Chairman Phil Parry. Oscar was treated for two types of leukaemia from age 3 to age 8. He had two bone marrow transplants – the second trialling an experimental stem cell transplant, 5 brain haemorrhages. Now 26, Oscar is a living example of the value of bench-to-bedside research.
