I've been volunteering with Harrogate Sea cadets since 2012 and I think that one of the strengths of this organization is that every volunteer has something to contribute to make this unit successful. I chose to be a Trustee, raising funds, organizing projects and ensuring that all our cadets and volunteers are safe and resourced with all that they need.

Join us in the inspiring journey of the Harrogate Sea Cadets as we prepare for the Shipshape Harrogate: The Rowathon, a spirited sporting event taking place on 6 June 2026. Our team is driven by a shared vision to transform our aging facilities, which currently face a daunting 60-year gap in thermal efficiency. Despite our best efforts, winter temperatures inside rarely rise above 17°C, making it challenging to create a warm and welcoming environment for our young cadets and dedicated adult volunteers. We are near to reaching our target of £72050 and work has begun already.

The heart of the problem lies in outdated infrastructure: single-skin brickwork and uninsulated loft spaces allow precious heat to escape, while peeling oil-based paint and tiny single-glazed roof lights cast a dim and damp atmosphere that stifles learning and morale. These conditions threaten not only comfort but also our ability to retain the passionate individuals who make our community thrive.

But hope shines brightly through our recent success. A pilot renovation in our Wardroom using Kingspan insulated plasterboard and directional lighting has already demonstrated remarkable results—warmer rooms, reduced eye strain, and an uplifted spirit among all who enter. Now, we are committed to extending this transformation across all facilities.

We are all raising a small amount and setting ourselves individual targets. My efforts are based on rowing 6000 meters in 30 minutes. That's 200 meters a minute. Last time I achieved that once. This time I will do it twice (with a long gap in-between!)
