Story
My 6.5-year-old son was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) in February 2022, he was only 4.5 years old then. Even though leukaemia treatments are increasingly leading to remission, AML is a tough one to treat and chances of remission are lower than the most common type of Leukaemia. My son was treated with 4 rounds of chemotherapy in 2022. He spent almost 7 months in hospital and was in Intensive Care for 8 days after his first round of chemo when he suffered from acute respiratory distress syndrome following infection and had a cardiac arrest. He survived it and got through 3 other rounds of chemotherapy and finally was in remission in September 2022. Sadly, he relapsed last year 2 days before his 6-years’ birthday. He received a bone marrow transplant in August 2023 after intense chemotherapy again and another 4 long months in hospital. He is currently in isolation at home recovering slowly from the harsher chemotherapy and is still under lots of medication. Any fever spike means is a rush to our local hospital ward within the hour.
I would not be able to describe what it is like and there is no need to share more depressing details but one important reason I’m writing this email is because when anyone spent that much time in hospital, the nurses, doctors, and consultants become the most important people in your life. The room you stay in, and the hospital facilities become your home and when the hospital doesn’t have enough funding, it makes your life even more miserable.
