Moira is walking for Embangweni girls

Moira Dunworth is raising money for Mamie Martin Fund

Team: Albany Wee Wander

Edinburgh Kiltwalk 2026 · 13 September 2026 · Start fundraising for this event

We work with partner schools in North Malawi to support girls at 7 secondary schools. We pay the school costs of these girls along with providing additional help for necessities so that they can benefit from their school place. We've been working there since 1993, through the vision of Mamie Martin.

Story

I am joining the Albany Deaf Church in walking to support Deaf girls' education in Malawi. This is through The Mamie Martin Fund (MMF). Specifically the Thompson Fund (managed by MMF) supports girls at Embangweni Secondary School and all funds raised by our Albany Team in this Wee Wander will go to that school in Embangweni. Girls are less likely to go to secondary school than boys and are more likely to drop out before they have completed all four years. This is particularly problematic for disabled girls.

The MMF pays school costs and provides for other necessities like soap, notebooks and sanitary pads. The MMF work is managed locally by Mercy Sibande, who lives in Mzuzu.
